The First Step: The Annullation
You don’t just hand over the keys. You hand over a history that has been officially closed. Before the buyer arrives, visit the Strassenverkehrsamt. The Fahrzeugausweis (Gray Card) needs the stamp. Annulliert. This is the signal that the car is no longer active on the road. It’s the signal that your liability is pausing. Without this stamp, the car is still tethered to your name. The Shield: The Kaufvertrag
In a private sale, the contract is your only defense. It isn’t just a receipt for money. It is a definition of terms. “Ab Platz” (As is). “Ohne Garantie” (Without warranty). In Switzerland, if you don’t explicitly exclude the warranty, you might be accidentally providing one. Precision in the contract doesn’t mean you’re hiding something. It means you’re defining the boundary of your responsibility. The Swiss Rule: The Kontrollschilder
The plates are yours. They do not follow the car. When the deal is done, the plates come off. They stay with you for your next vehicle, or they go back to the Canton. Allowing a buyer to drive away on your plates isn’t a favor. It’s a risk. A risk to your bonus protection. A risk to your legal standing. The handover is absolute. The plates stay. The Final Signal: The Insurance & Tax
The sale isn’t finished when the car leaves the driveway. It’s finished when the system resets. Once the Gray Card is cancelled, the signal is sent. Your insurance stops. Your road tax is pro-rated. But don’t wait for the system. Notify your provider. Ensure the “Abrechnung” is clean. The Professional Exit A disorganized seller creates a hesitant buyer. When the paperwork is ready—stamped, signed, and clear—the price is no longer the only topic. The topic is Confidence. Don’t just sell the metal. Sell the peace of mind.Download the “CAR SELLING CHECKLIST” as a PDF:
